They are the youngest team in the league. A squad that did not have any special task before the start of the season. Today, they are in the ABA League Finals. This is the story about Mega Leks.
Summer 2015. Mega Leks started preparations for the next season without many major players from the previous campaign. Nikola Jokić went to NBA, Nenad Miljenović decided to continue his career in Spain, the club has also stayed without Nemanja Krstić, Marko Kešelj, Andrija Bojić... Once again it was time for a complete reconstruction of the roster.
Still, Mega Leks managed to do a very important thing last summer. They persuaded head coach Dejan Milojević to stay at the helm of the team and to continue with his great work. Oh yes, he had done a great job with this club, while he was about to achieve even greater things…
Milojević has always believed in young players, so the first parts of the new team were the "kids” that he decided to keep from the previous season - Ognjen Jaramaz, Rade Zagorac, Djordje Simeunović, Danilo Nikolić... All of them still very young players, but with a valuable year spent in the ABA League behind them.
The time has come to select the newcomers. Mega Leks loaned super talented Aleksandar Aranitović from Crvena zvezda Telekom, they signed a very good power forward Nikola Janković, while they found two great basketball potentials in France - Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot and Alpha Kaba. The last part of the puzzle was a brain of this new team - Nikola Ivanović, who came from Budućnost VOLI.
Then it has started! Despite losing the two out of three games at the start of the new season, it was obvious that Mega Leks were playing a very good basketball. The results came very quickly. With five consecutive wins the pink and green crew have climbed up among the top four teams on the standings and have stayed there until the end of the regular season!
It has simply been an incredible journey of this young squad. Nikola Ivanović and Ognjen Jaramaz turned out to be one of the best point guard tandems in the league, Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot was hitting the TOP 5 list every week, Aleksandar Aranitović, Danilo Nikolić, Nikola Janković and the others were perfectly playing their roles. Most importantly, Mega Leks were winning!
Still, the club have faced a lot of problems with injuries along the way. Alpha Kaba and Rade Zagorac have missed most of the league campaign due to injures, while the real problem came just before the Playoffs. Alpha Kaba, Aleksandar Aranitović and Ognjen Jaramaz have suffered serious injuries in the final rounds of the regular season… All of them were OUT for the Playoffs!
Mega Leks were about to face the regular season leader Budućnost VOLI in the ABA League Semi-Finals without three major players! Even head coach Dejan Milojević admitted that it would be a miracle that his team win the series… But, he has never stopped believing in his boys.
The Game 1 in Podgorica - The first miracle. Mega Leks won the match by 85:81 and took the lead in the series! The Game 2 in Sremska Mitrovica - The second miracle. Mega Leks managed to defeat Budućnost VOLI for the second time in a row - 76:75 - and to make a historic success!
For the first time in club"s history Mega Leks will play in the ABA League Finals!
The kids are living a dream and they do not want to stop...
