Slovenia are the new European basketball champions, as they have beaten Serbia in the final game of the tournament, in what has been a historical clash of two ABA League countries fighting for the gold.

The squad, led by Igor Kokoškov from the bench, have written history, as they have not only climbed on the top of Europe for the first time ever, but have also won their first medal on the international stage in senior competition.

It has been a thriller until the final minutes, when Slovenia have stepped up without both key players Goran Dragić and Luka Dončić (injured) on court, and turned the game their way.

The final score was 93:85 and it was Goran Dragić who thrilled the crowd the most with his 35 points. Klemen Prepelič also shined with 21 points, while on Serbia’s side Bogdan Bogdanović had 22 points and Milan Mačvan 18.

Goran Dragić, who had previously made important steps in his career in the regional competition, playing for both Petrol Olimpija and Slovan Ljubljana, was named the MVP of the championship, while former Partizan NIS and Petrol Olimpija players Bogdan Bogdanović and Luka Dončić were also named into the championship’s All-Star five.
