ZADAR – Budućnost VOLI 65:63 (18:21, 13:16, 22:13, 12:13)
Game recap: Zadar seized a huge win as they defeated Budućnost VOLI at home court in Round 21 of the 2021/22 AdmiralBet ABA League regular season. The home team made the key 5:0 run in the final 2 minutes of the game to pull off a late comeback and to beat one of the top placed teams in the league.
Zadar have therefore ended Budućnost VOLI’s 8-game winning streak, while it is also important to mention that this was the 1st defeat for the Podgorica side since November last year.
Key moments: Budućnost VOLI were in front by 63:60 and had a chance to increase their lead as they had a ball in their possession. Vladimir Micov went for a lay-up, however he was blocked by Zadar big guy Trevor Thompson, while the home team used the opportunity to run a fastbreak and Martin Junaković scored an easy 2-pointer to reduce the gap to 63:62.
After defending their basket once again, Zadar regained the ball-possession, while Dario Drežnjak got fouled and was sent to the free-throw line. Drežnjak scored 1 out of 2 free throws to tie the score – 63:63.
On the other side of the court, Zadar defended their basket for the 3rd consecutive time, so they had a big chance to take over the lead. Justin Carter missed a tough jumper, but Trevor Thompson made the key offensive rebound and got fouled in the process. Thompson made both free throws to put Zadar in front – 65:63.
With 18 seconds remaining on the game clock, Budućnost VOLI had one last chance to win this game. The ball ended up in the hands of Vladimir Micov who pulled up for a 3-pointer, but his shot was not good and Zadar grabbed the win.
Man of the match: That would be trevor Thompson who lacked just 1 rebound to complete a double-double as he finished the match with 16 points and 9 rebounds. Also, he played the key role in that late comeback of his team.
Can’t trick the stats: Despite being in front for most of the game, Budućnost VOLI simply ran out of solutions in their offensive plays in key moments. The visitors did not score a single point in the final 2 minutes of the game and paid the price.
