Nikola Jovanović returns to the AdmiralBet ABA League as he joins Vienna

Nikola Jovanović has joined  Vienna from French side Limoges CSP. In Vienna, the 2.11-meter Serbian big man reunites with head coach Dragan Bajić, with whom he previously enjoyed a successful spell at Igokea five years ago.

The 32-year-old is a versatile frontcourt player who can play both center and power forward, bringing size, physicality and a strong presence in the paint.

Jovanović's career has taken him from the NCAA to the NBA Summer League, the EuroLeague, the Basketball Champions League and several of Europe's top domestic leagues. He now returns to the AdmiralBet ABA League with BC Vienna.

"It is a great honor and a special privilege for me to play for Austria's top basketball club next season. We want to improve every day and achieve our goals together," said Jovanović.

With the signing of their fourth new player, BC Vienna continue shaping their roster for the 2026/27 season.

Jovanović grew up in Belgrade, a city with a rich basketball tradition and a long history of producing elite international players. Before beginning his college career, he spent his final high school season at Arlington Country Day School in Jacksonville, Florida.

He then played three seasons for the University of Southern California in NCAA Division I. In his final season with the Trojans, he averaged 12.1 points and 7.0 rebounds per game while helping USC qualify for the NCAA Tournament.

After declaring for the 2016 NBA Draft, Jovanović went undrafted but participated in the NBA Summer League with both the Detroit Pistons and Los Angeles Lakers. He impressed with Detroit, earning a preseason roster spot and appearing in exhibition games before being released shortly before the regular season.

He began his professional career with the Grand Rapids Drive, then the Detroit Pistons' NBA D-League affiliate, before moving to the Westchester Knicks later that season. In July 2017, he also played NBA Summer League for the Chicago Bulls but did not secure a contract.

Later that month, Jovanović returned to Belgrade and signed with Crvena zvezda. During two seasons with the Serbian powerhouse, he gained valuable EuroLeague experience and won the Serbian championship in 2018.

He later had loan spells with Aquila Basket Trento, competing in both Italy's Serie A and the EuroCup, before joining Igokea, where he first worked under Dragan Bajić during the 2020/21 season.

That Igokea team enjoyed one of the most successful campaigns in club history, reaching the AdmiralBet ABA League semifinals, winning the Bosnian Cup and narrowly missing out on a Basketball Champions League Final Eight appearance.

"The appointment of Dragan Bajić played a major role in my decision to come to Vienna," Jovanović said.

Bajić believes Jovanović's impact extends well beyond his basketball abilities.

"Nikola is first and foremost an outstanding person. At the same time, he brings tremendous international experience and has played for some of Europe's most respected clubs," said the BC Vienna head coach.

Following his successful season at Igokea, Jovanović joined Nizhny Novgorod before moving to Belgium, where he captured the national championship with Filou Oostende in 2023.

A year later, while playing for the Antwerp Giants, he was named the BNXT League's Sixth Man of the Year and earned a place in the competition's Dream Team.

After spells in Mexico and Italy, Jovanović joined Limoges CSP in France's LNB Élite. The move also carries historical significance for BC Vienna, as club legend Stjepan Stazić represented the French club around the turn of the century.

In Limoges, Jovanović enjoyed an efficient campaign, shooting over 60 percent from the field and around 80 percent from the free-throw line. He now reunites with Bajić in Vienna, where he is expected to play a key role as an interior finisher.

Bajić also highlighted his former player's basketball qualities:

"Nikola will give us a great deal in the paint. He has excellent footwork and technique around the basket, defends the pick-and-roll at a high level, controls the space under the rim and will be a major asset on the boards."

EuroLeague-Erfahrung: BC Vienna verpflichtet Nikola Jovanović

Nikola Jovanović wechselt vom französischen Traditionsklub Limoges CSP zum BC Vienna. In Wien trifft der 2,11 Meter große serbische Big Man auf einen alten Bekannten: Headcoach Dragan Bajić, mit dem er bereits vor fünf Jahren bei KK Igokea erfolgreich zusammenarbeitete.

Der 32-Jährige ist im Frontcourt variabel einsetzbar. Als Center bringt er Physis und Präsenz für die Zone mit, kann aber ebenso die Position des Power Forwards übernehmen.

Seine Laufbahn führte ihn von der NCAA über die NBA Summer League bis in die EuroLeague, die FIBA Basketball Champions League und mehrere europäische Topligen. Nun freut sich Jovanović auf seine neue Aufgabe in Wien und die Rückkehr in die AdmiralBet ABA League.

„Es ist eine große Ehre und ein besonderes Privileg für mich, in der kommenden Saison für Österreichs besten Basketballklub aufzulaufen. Wir wollen uns jeden Tag weiterentwickeln und gemeinsam unsere Ziele erreichen“, sagt der Neuzugang.

Mit der vierten Neuverpflichtung nimmt der Kader für die Saison 2026/27 weiter Form an.

Jovanović wuchs in Belgrad auf, einer Stadt, in der Basketball tief verwurzelt ist und die seit Jahrzehnten Spieler von internationalem Format hervorbringt. Für sein letztes Highschool-Jahr wechselte er an die Arlington Country Day School in Jacksonville im US-Bundesstaat Florida und setzte dort seine Entwicklung fort.

Anschließend spielte Jovanović drei Jahre lang für die University of Southern California in der NCAA Division I. In seiner letzten Saison bei den Trojans kam er auf durchschnittlich 12,1 Punkte und 7,0 Rebounds und qualifizierte sich mit dem Team für „March Madness“, das prestigeträchtige NCAA-Turnier im US-amerikanischen College-Basketball.

Nach drei Jahren an der USC verzichtete er auf seine vierte College-Saison und meldete sich für den NBA-Draft 2016 an. Nachdem er dort nicht berücksichtigt worden war, lief er zunächst in der Summer League für die Detroit Pistons und die Los Angeles Lakers auf.

Besonders aussichtsreich verlief sein Engagement bei Detroit: Er gehörte während der Saisonvorbereitung zum Kader der Pistons und kam auch in der Preseason zum Einsatz, ehe kurz vor dem Start der Regular Season der Cut folgte.

Seine erste Profisaison begann Jovanović bei den Grand Rapids Drive, dem damaligen D-League-Partner der Detroit Pistons. Im weiteren Saisonverlauf wechselte er zu den Westchester Knicks. Im Juli 2017 lief er mit den Chicago Bulls erneut in der Summer League auf, erhielt anschließend jedoch keinen Vertrag.

Noch im selben Monat kehrte Jovanović nach Belgrad zurück und unterschrieb bei KK Crvena Zvezda. Mit dem serbischen Spitzenklub sammelte er in zwei Spielzeiten Erfahrung in der EuroLeague und gewann 2018 die serbische Meisterschaft.

Es folgten Leihstationen bei Aquila Basket Trento, mit dem er in der Serie A (LNB) und im EuroCup spielte, sowie bei Igokea. Dort arbeitete er in der Saison 2020/21 erstmals mit Dragan Bajić zusammen.

Igokea überzeugte damals sowohl in der AdmiralBet ABA League als auch auf internationaler Bühne. Die Mannschaft erreichte im regionalen Wettbewerb das Halbfinale, gewann den bosnischen Pokal und schrammte in der Basketball Champions League nur knapp am Final Four vorbei.

„Die Verpflichtung von Dragan Bajić hat meine Entscheidung wesentlich beeinflusst“, sagt Jovanović über seinen Wechsel in die Bundeshauptstadt.

Auch Bajić weiß genau, was er an seinem neuen Center hat. Für den Headcoach geht dessen Wert weit über das Sportliche hinaus: „Nikola ist in erster Linie ein außergewöhnlich guter Mensch. Gleichzeitig verfügt er über große internationale Erfahrung und hat im Laufe seiner Karriere für namhafte Klubs gespielt.“

Nach der erfolgreichen Saison bei Igokea wechselte Jovanović zunächst zum russischen Klub Nischni Nowgorod und später nach Belgien, wo er Edelmetall sammelte. Mit Filou Oostende gewann er 2023 die nationale Meisterschaft.

Ein Jahr später wurde er im Trikot der Antwerp Giants als bester Sixth Man der BNXT League ausgezeichnet und in das Dream Team des Wettbewerbs gewählt.

Nach Engagements in Mexiko und Italien schloss er sich schließlich Limoges CSP in der französischen LNB Élite an. Ein Name, bei dem man beim BC Vienna sofort hellhörig wird: Auch Klublegende Stjepan Stazić trug um die Jahrtausendwende das Trikot der „Les Verts“.

In Limoges präsentierte sich Jovanović hocheffizient und traf über 60 Prozent seiner Würfe aus dem Feld sowie rund 80 Prozent von der Freiwurflinie. Nun kreuzen sich die Wege von Jovanović und Bajić erneut: Beim BC Vienna übernimmt der erfahrene Center unter seinem früheren Coach eine zentrale Rolle als Inside-Finisher.

Bajić hebt auch die sportlichen Qualitäten seines früheren Schützlings hervor: „Nikola wird uns vor allem in der Zone viel geben. Er verfügt über ein technisch sehr ausgereiftes Spiel in Korbnähe, verteidigt das Pick-and-Roll auf hohem Niveau und kontrolliert den Raum unter dem Korb. Außerdem wird er uns beim Rebounding enorm helfen.“
