Luka Kureš reinforces Vienna backcourt

Luka Kureš is the first guard to join head coach Dragan Bajić's newly assembled roster. Primarily a shooting guard, the newcomer is also capable of taking on secondary playmaking duties while making the most of his strengths away from the ball.

"I am very excited to become part of BC Vienna and begin a new chapter in my career. I want to continue developing as a player, contribute to the team's success, and make the most of every opportunity this season," said Kureš.

Born in Ljubljana, Kureš began his career with Pingvini Ljubljana in the lower tiers of Slovenian basketball. After spells with Škofja Loka and Hopsi Polzela, he joined Ilirija in 2021.

Over the years, Kureš developed into one of the team's key players. He first made a name for himself as a reliable three-point shooter, but gradually took on greater responsibility in organising the offence as a combo guard.

His greatest success with Ilirija came during the 2024/25 season, when the club reached the ABA League 2 Finals and secured promotion to the AdmiralBet ABA League after finishing as runners-up.

Last season, Kureš averaged 8.8 points, 2.0 assists, 1.7 rebounds and 0.9 steals in 26 AdmiralBet ABA League appearances. He averaged 24.9 minutes per game while shooting 35 percent from beyond the three-point line.

With his arrival, BC Vienna adds a talented guard expected to bring additional quality and versatility to the roster. "Luka is a perimeter player with good ball-handling skills and an excellent shot. He can also make a significant contribution on the defensive end," said Bajić.

Kureš also brings valuable experience from 3x3 basketball. He has played more than 240 games in the discipline and has represented the Slovenian national team. The quick decision-making, secure ball-handling, and one-on-one situations that define 3x3 basketball are also reflected in his five-on-five game.

However, this move marks the first time Kureš will play outside his home country. By joining BC Vienna, he leaves Slovenian basketball and steps out of his comfort zone for the first time in his club career.

Bajić believes the transfer will be an important step in the player's development: "I am convinced this move will provide him with additional motivation and represent an important step forward in his career."

Der BC Vienna verpflichtet Luka Kureš. Der 27-jährige Slowene wechselt von Perspektiva Ilirija aus Ljubljana nach Wien und ist die fünfte Neuverpflichtung für die Saison 2026/27.

Kureš ist der erste Guard im neu formierten Kader von Headcoach Dragan Bajić. Der vorwiegend als Shooting Guard eingesetzte Neuzugang kann als sekundärer Playmaker Aufgaben im Spielaufbau übernehmen und seine Stärken zugleich abseits des Balls ausspielen.

„Ich freue mich sehr, Teil des BC Vienna zu sein und ein neues Kapitel in meiner Karriere zu beginnen. Ich möchte mich als Spieler weiterentwickeln, zum Erfolg der Mannschaft beitragen und in dieser Saison jede Chance bestmöglich nutzen“, sagt Kureš.

Kureš stammt aus Ljubljana und begann seine Laufbahn bei Pingvini Ljubljana in den unteren slowenischen Spielklassen. Über Škofja Loka und Hopsi Polzela führte ihn sein Weg 2021 zu Ilirija.

Über mehrere Jahre wurde Kureš zu einem wichtigen Leistungsträger der Mannschaft. Vor allem als Distanzschütze machte er sich einen Namen, übernahm mit der Zeit aber auch als Combo Guard mehr Verantwortung im Spielaufbau.

Seinen bislang größten Erfolg mit Ilirija feierte er in der Saison 2024/25. Der Klub erreichte das Finale der ABA League 2 und schaffte als Vizemeister den Aufstieg in die AdmiralBet ABA League.

In der vergangenen Saison kam Kureš dort in 26 Spielen auf durchschnittlich 8,8 Punkte, 2,0 Assists, 1,7 Rebounds und 0,9 Steals. Er stand im Schnitt 24,9 Minuten auf dem Feld und traf 35 Prozent seiner Dreier.

Der BC Vienna gewinnt damit einen talentierten Guard, der zusätzliche Qualität und Flexibilität bringen soll. „Luka ist ein Spieler für die Außenpositionen, der über ein gutes Ballhandling und einen sehr guten Wurf verfügt. Auch in der Defensive kann er einen großen Beitrag leisten“, erklärt Bajić.

Zusätzliche Erfahrung bringt Kureš aus dem 3×3-Basketball mit. In dieser Spielform absolvierte er bereits mehr als 240 Partien und lief auch für die slowenische Nationalmannschaft auf. Schnelle Entscheidungen, sicheres Ballhandling und direkte Duelle gehören dort zum Alltag und finden sich auch in seinem Spiel im Fünf-gegen-Fünf wieder.

Auf Klubebene führte sein Weg bislang jedoch nicht über die Landesgrenzen hinaus. Mit dem Wechsel nach Wien verlässt er erstmals den heimischen Basketball und damit auch seine bisherige Komfortzone.

Bajić sieht darin einen wichtigen Impuls für seine weitere Entwicklung: „Ich bin überzeugt, dass der Wechsel für ihn zusätzliche Motivation und einen wichtigen Schritt in seiner weiteren Karriere darstellt.“
