The Dragons are hungry for trophies and they want to achieve much more than in the previous season.
Cedevita Olimpija can’t really be happy with their results in the last year’s campaign. Yes, they have won all the domestic trophies, but their AdmiralBet ABA League and EuroCup campaigns were quite disappointing.
The Ljubljana side did not even reach the semi-finals of the 2023/24 regional championship as they were eliminated by Mega MIS in the quarter-finals and that made the team management start almost a complete reconstruction of the team over the summer.
The first big move the club made was appointing Zvezdan Mitrović as new head coach. Mitrović, who was the EuroCup champion with AS Monaco back in 2021, has a lot of experience and he may be the one to bring back the winning mentality to the Dragons.
The second big move was extending the contract with team captain Jaka Blažič who’s been one of Cedevita Olimpija’s best players over the past few years. Apart from Blažić, the team decided to keep three more players from the last-season roster, including Dewayne Stewart Jr, Gregor Glas and Rok Radović.
The third part of the 2024/25 team puzzle are the newcomers and Cedevita Olimpija have made a total number of 8 signings this summer, plus they brought back Lovro Gnjidić from a year-long loan in Mega MIS.
The eight new players in Cedevita Olimpija roster are: Brynton Lemar (Hapoel Jerusalem), Aleksej Nikolić (Elan Chalon), Martinas Geben (Baxi Manresa), Žiga Daneu (Kansai Helios), DeVante' Jones (Le Mans), Bine Prepelič (Spirou Basket Charleroi), Devin Robinson (Baxi Manresa) and Derek Ogbeide (Pistoia).
Three of them have already played in the region as Aleksej Nikolić was a member of Spars and Partizan Mozzart Bet, Bine Prepelič played for Kansai Helios, while Žiga Daneu returns to Cedevita Olimpija after spending two years playing for Nutrispoint Ilirija and Kansai Helios, respectively.
The other five newcomers are all about to make their debut in the AdmiralBet ABA League.
Having in mind that almost half of the team are yet to feel the thrill of the AdmiralBet ABA League and that there are so many new faces in the roster, it is hard to give any assumption of what Cedevita Olimpija can achieve in this first year under the helm of coach Zvezdan Mitrović.
But, one thing is certain. The Dragons want a lot more than in the previous season and they have the quality to achieve big things in the 2024/25 campaign.
