Partizan NIS joined Basketball Champions League as competition expands

Basketball Champions League announced on Friday that it has accepted the late admission request of Partizan NIS into the Basketball Champions League"s inaugural 2016-17 season. It also confirmed a modification of the competition system by increasing the number of Regular Season teams to 40.

The BCL administration examined the case and, upon consultation with the Board of Directors, took the decision to accept the three top level European clubs, AEK and Stelmet Zielona Gora, besides Partizan NIS into BCL.

The league also announced that the format of the Basketball Champions League for the upcoming season will be modified with 40 teams participating, divided into five groups of eight teams each. A new group (E) of eight teams will be created and it will include the new entries AEK Athens, Partizan NIS, Stelmet Zielona Gora and five teams from the Qualification Rounds that will now advance directly into the Regular Season: Besiktas Sompo Japan, Dinamo Sassari, MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg, Proximus Spirou Charleroi and Szolnoki Olaj.

From earlier, four ABA League teams were confirmed as the members of Basketball Champions League. Cibona and Mega Leks will compete in Regular Season Group D, while Igokea will face Mornar in the Qualification Round 1.
