Analysis: Points per possession after time-outs

The ABA League season is approaching its mid-point and the league’s most efficient offensive team is Budućnost VOLI. A big part of their success to this point can be attributed to their success scoring after timeouts. In fact, they have been one of the most efficient after timeout scoring teams in any league in the entire world.

Timeouts give coaches a chance to draw up set plays and through they sometimes do not work as planned, after timeout situations tend to be far more scripted than possessions at any other point in a game. The average ABA League possession has been converted for 0.92 points per possession this season. After timeout possessions make up 12% of all possessions and are converted at a marginally higher rate. Six teams are scoring after timeout possessions at a rate above the league average, but four have stood above the rest—the three listed above and Crvena Zvezda mts which falls a fraction of a point behind FMP. No one player tends to drive after timeout efficiency—it takes a true team effort.

As well as many of the league’s teams have scored this year, Budućnost has been on an unbelievable pace shooting an adjusted field goal percentage of 77% after timeouts. Executing at a very high level out of stoppages, Budućnost regularly operates deep into the shot clock with their set plays, but nonetheless generate quality shots with great consistency. The poise and shot-making of their roster has shined this season.

Mornar Bar may be a distant second, but their performance after timeouts has helped them significantly this season. Their shot making has been average, but they have done an excellent job generating shots around the rim leading to trips to the foul line. The opposite is true of FMP whose 3-point shooting has been impressive within their sets.
