Through the first 12 rounds of ABA League play, 11% of all possessions have come in transition. Though transition play is not very common, it makes up many of the leagues most exciting moments and generates a terrific 1.14 points per possession. The table above lists the 4 most productive transition scoring teams in the ABA League this season.

Digging Deeper

Some teams score in transition much more often than others. For example, Cedevita Olimpija has scored a league-best 164 points in transition this season, nearly double the 89 scored by the team with the lowest count. Cedevita Olimpija is an interesting case because they force the lowest percentage of turnovers in the ABA League defensively but are still the competition’s most prolific team pushing the ball. They do an extremely good job advancing the ball after rebounds to gain an advantage to make up for how infrequently they turn defense into offense. Jaka Blažič leads their players scoring 3.3 points per game as their success is built on a group effort.

Crvena zvezda mts benefits from Lorenzo Brown’s presence in more ways than one. Not only does he lead the ABA League in transition assists, but he ranks 4th in points per game as well. As a whole, Zvezda turns the ball over on only 10.2% of their possessions and picks and chooses their spots well to lead the ABA League scoring 1.31 points per transition possession.

Mornar gets over half of their transition production from the duo of Jacob Pullen and Nemanja Vranješ. When they look to push the ball, they have several wings who will not hesitate to run to the three-point arc for deep jumpers and lead the ABA League in transition three-point makes as a result.

In contrast, Zadar does much of its best work in transition getting to the foul line. Bryon Allen leads all players in transition scoring and does a very nice job drawing fouls in the open court. His aggressiveness is a big reason Zadar leads all teams in transition possessions per game. They are never shy about looking to create advantages by pushing the ball.
